1. Can you explain the immigration reform in a nutshell?
Unfortunately, the immigration bill has not succeeded. It will be at least until the year 2009 before another bill is introduced into Congress becausenext year (2008) is an election year and an immigration bill will be toocontroversial.
2. With the situation of Indonesia getting better, is there any chance to get asylum in the United States?
The situation in Indonesia is getting better which means that it will be more difficult to be granted asylum in the United States -- not impossible, but certainly more difficult.

R1 Visa for religious applicant:
1. Is it better to continue to apply R1 in Indonesia or is it better in the United States? If I did not get rejected by the U.S. embassy and I have not applied for R1, is it better to do it in Indonesia or in the United States?
. If you have already been refused for an R1 at the US Consulate one time
it is probable that you will be refused a second time unless the financial
support figures really change. Under the circumstances as you have
described them I would probably recommend applying for an R1 change of
status in the US. The related question is whether you and your wife and
children can come to the US in some other status, such as tourist. If you
come by yourself and are able to change status to R1 in the US while your
wife and children remain in Indonesia there is some risk whether they will
be granted R status at a later time because the US Consulate will be aware
that they rejected you the first time and may not be willing to grant your
wife and children R visas.
What documents do I need from my side?
The documents you need will be education transcripts and degrees,
ordination certificates, employment reference letters, and, proof that the
church in the US will be able to pay a sufficient salary. Also they will be
required to give a complete description of what you will be doing at the
church in the US.
If I was rejected a few times in Indonesia by the U.S. embassy, and if I were to go to the United States as a visitor and apply for a R1, would that be a problem.?
I am not aware if USCIS knows about your rejection in Indonesia but it
